US seeks to join Musk's challenge to X's €120m EU fine
The EU said X misled users by selling blue check badges without meaningfully verifying account identities.
The US government is asking to join Elon Musk and X in their legal effort to overturn a €120m EU fine tied to X's blue verification badges, BBC Business reports.
The European Commission said in December 2025 that the platform deceives users by allowing people to pay for a blue check mark without meaningfully verifying who is behind an account.
BBC Business reports that US Assistant Attorney General Brett A. Shumate said the European Commission had inappropriately tried to expand its reach to American companies outside its control.
The US Department of Justice has filed an application with the EU's General Court supporting efforts to dismiss the case, arguing that the US has a clear interest in the outcome under a provision allowing states to intervene if they can show an interest in the result.
