Explosion and building collapse in central Athens leaves two dead, four missing

A residential building in Plaka, in central Athens, collapsed after an explosion in a tourist area, leaving two people dead and four missing, a Greek fire brigade official said, according to Reuters.

The blast, which occurred on Friday, destroyed a two-storey building near major attractions including the Acropolis and the Temple of Zeus, injured three people, and damaged nearby houses, shops, and cars.

Emergency crews assisted by rescue dogs searched for an elderly couple living in one flat and four tourists staying in another, and found the bodies of a man and a young woman as debris was cleared.

The fire brigade official said the building was left in a wrecked state, with rubble and broken glass reported as far as three blocks away.
