Filipino domestic helpers in Hong Kong return to college degree goals
South China Morning Post profiles Filipino domestic helpers in Hong Kong who say they are resuming bachelor’s degree plans they had to pause after leaving school for family and work.
The outlet highlights Dyan Agonoy, who moved from the Philippines to work as a domestic helper in Hong Kong and said she missed family milestones because she is away from her children.
According to SCMP Economy, Agonoy left university, married young, and started a family, and she took up domestic work abroad without a bachelor’s degree, which she says is required for many jobs.
SCMP Economy also describes Gelanie Aguilario, who twice tried to earn a bachelor’s degree in political science and then education, but said pregnancy and family obligations derailed her plans.
