Trump will face a more confident Xi at Apec in Shenzhen, experts say
The SCMP notes China, as the Apec host, will control more of the agenda and preparation than it could during a prior Washington summit.
The South China Morning Post reports that when Donald Trump arrives in Shenzhen for the November Apec summit, experts expect him to face Xi Jinping in a more confident posture than during Xi’s recent state visit to Washington.
According to the outlet, analysts point to three drivers of that confidence: a newly upgraded bilateral framework aimed at “constructive relationship of strategic stability” based on respect, fairness, and reciprocity, a warmer tone during Xi’s three-day visit, and China’s leverage as host.
The report adds that in Shenzhen, China will have more autonomy over agenda setting, topic selection, and preparatory work than in the Washington summit, where the US controlled the choreography and China had more limited rights to participate and discuss.
