Australia bars Hong Kong applicants from adding families to visas
Australia’s home affairs and immigration authorities said international students will no longer be able to attach family members to student or graduate visas starting with a Sept. 17 policy change by Tony Burke.
Hong Kong residents pursuing Australian settlement via a study-to-migrate pathway will not be exempt from new visa rules that restrict family members from being added to student and graduate applications, Australia’s home affairs authorities said, according to SCMP Economy.
The rules were announced last month and were tied to concerns from some Hongkongers who had expected to bring their families while studying in Australia before applying for temporary graduate visas to settle.
In a Sept. 17 statement, Tony Burke, Australia’s minister for home affairs and immigration and citizenship, said authorities would no longer allow international students to attach family members to student or graduate visas.
