Japanese video installation about wartime atrocities heads to London
The work, created by Meiro Koizumi, uses testimony from former Imperial Japanese Army soldier Hajime Kondo, filmed when he was 99.
A video installation built around testimony from a former Japanese soldier about killings of civilians and sexual assault in wartime China will be shown in London in October, despite reluctance from museums in Japan, according to SCMP Economy.
The project, titled “The Angels of Testimony,” was created by contemporary artist Meiro Koizumi, and it has drawn overseas acclaim while he continues to seek a Japanese museum willing to exhibit the award-winning work, SCMP Economy reported.
Koizumi said he believes the piece will only be truly complete once it can be seen in Japan, and the installation is built around three screens in the exhibition space, SCMP Economy added.
In the work, the late Hajime Kondo, a former Imperial Japanese Army soldier who was 99 when the testimony was filmed, is presented as the central figure, the outlet said.
