US and Chinese bidders vie for development rights at Mrima Hill in Kenya

Mrima Hill, located about 65 km southwest of Mombasa, is described as rich in rare earths and niobium, a steel strengthening metal, according to SCMP Economy.

Mrima Hill, a sacred site on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast about 65 km southwest of Mombasa, is emerging as a new front in the US-China rivalry for critical minerals, SCMP Economy reports.

The outlet says US-led and Chinese bidders are competing for rights to develop the site, which it describes as rich in rare earths and niobium.

SCMP Economy also reports that American officials have offered to support Kenya’s development of Mrima Hill.

The competition for Mrima Hill highlights how critical mineral projects in emerging markets are increasingly tied to US-China strategic competition, according to SCMP Economy.
