Heathrow third runway decision delayed as PM Andy Burnham withholds support
The airport expansion is estimated at £33bn, and Heathrow said it may not be operational before 2039.
BBC Business reports that Prime Minister Andy Burnham declined to say whether he supports a third runway at Heathrow, saying he wants to wait for results from a consultation on the scheme.
Burnham said it is not right to jump in on the back of the consultation, after Heathrow indicated the expansion could be delayed by up to four years.
The BBC Business report says a schedule to open by 2035 is now uncertain, with Heathrow suggesting operations may not begin until after 2039.
The project is estimated to cost £33bn and has drawn opposition from environmental campaigners and local resident groups, as well as criticism from London Mayor Sadiq Khan.
