Indonesia weighs Chinese investment for 2,772 km Trans-Kalimantan railway
The project would link Kalimantan’s resource-rich region and follows Indonesia’s first high-speed rail line between Jakarta and Bandung, despite analysts warning deals may be negotiated cautiously due to past financial strains.
Indonesia is considering foreign investment, including from China, to support development of a Trans-Kalimantan railway network spanning 2,772 km through the resource-rich region of Kalimantan, according to SCMP Economy.
Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said the Indonesian government is exploring potential foreign investment, and Antara reported that China and Russia have expressed interest in the project.
SCMP Economy also noted that analysts expect any future commercial agreements to be negotiated cautiously, citing financial strains associated with Indonesia’s earlier high-speed line between Jakarta and Bandung.
The report ties the caution to broader challenges that stalled a proposed underground metro project in Bali, a congested tourist province.
