Southeast Asia weighs relief after US-China thaw but doubts remain

Southeast Asia is welcoming a thaw in US-China ties that continues after the Xi-Trump summit, according to analysts cited by SCMP Economy.

The outlet reports analysts expect the region to face less pressure as open frictions between Washington and Beijing, including over the South China Sea, ease.

Despite that relief, caution remains, as the summit did not resolve deeper disputes, leaving uncertainty for third countries navigating US-China competition, SCMP Economy said.

SCMP Economy also quoted Lucio Blanco Pitlo III, a research fellow at the Manila-based Asia Pacific Pathways to Progress Foundation, saying stable great-power relations with guardrails could give third countries more space in an increasingly complex environment.
