UK essential crops concentrated in drought-risk areas, analysis finds

The analysis by Rebalance Earth says 81% of England’s fresh produce is concentrated in regions already experiencing water stress.

A nature-focused investment fund says most of the UK’s essential food supply is grown in areas of England exposed to moderate to very high drought risk, according to analysis by Rebalance Earth.

The fund found that 81% of England’s fresh produce is concentrated in parts of the country that are already experiencing water stress. It also reported that large shares of staple crops are grown in drought-risk areas, including 77% of England’s wheat, 75% of barley, and 74% of oilseed rape.

Rebalance Earth said about a quarter of England’s staple crops are grown in areas facing an acute risk of drought, including 30% of wheat and barley, 28% of oilseed rape, 27% of fresh produce, and 21% of potatoes.

The Guardian reports that the fund warned drought can affect the economy by lowering yields, straining supply chains, and raising prices.
