Alabama settles with TikTok over teen safety, requires new usage limits
The settlement requires TikTok to add a two-hour daily time limit for Alabama teenagers and strengthens age checks, with a minimum $100 million payment and potential $300 million total if other states join.
Alabama reached a settlement with TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, that requires the platform to introduce new teen usage limits and enhanced age-verification measures in the state, resolving claims that TikTok endangered children and misled consumers about its safety, according to Insurance Journal.
The agreement, which came days before a scheduled trial, calls for changes including a two-hour daily time limit for teenagers in Alabama, a pause after 15 minutes of use, and stricter age checks.
TikTok will pay Alabama at least $100 million under the settlement, and the payout could rise to $300 million if 40 other attorneys general sign onto similar agreements within a specified timeframe, the outlet reported.
TikTok said the deal builds on its commitment to continually enhance safety tools to protect teens, and the settlement is Alabama’s first with a state in the wider litigation over social media’s impact on teen well-being, Insurance Journal added.
