FPIs turn to IPOs as they sell Indian equities in secondary market

NSDL data show foreign investors invested ₹8,551 crore in IPOs through 25 September, even as equity selling on exchanges reached ₹2,95,971 crore in 2026.

Foreign portfolio investors have continued participating in India’s primary market, even as they sold equities on exchanges, according to NSDL data cited by LiveMint Markets. With about 34 IPOs hitting the primary market in September, FPIs invested ₹8,551 crore in IPOs through 25 September, the outlet said.

At the same time, FPIs kept reducing their holdings in the secondary market. Total equity selling through exchanges in 2026 reached ₹2,95,971 crore, while primary market investments during the same period stood at ₹54,398 crore.

The divergence sharpened after positive inflows in July and August, LiveMint Markets added. Equity outflows through exchanges were ₹25,682 crore as of 25 September, while IPO investments through the same date were ₹8,551 crore, reflecting a more selective approach to Indian stocks.

Mohit Gulati of ITI Alternates said the split shows two trends, with FPIs selling in the secondary market while directing capital toward IPOs, according to the outlet. The story notes the shift is evident in the gap between exchange sales and IPO investment figures.
