Apple ordered to pay $5.7bn in vibration patent suit

A US jury found Apple used Taction Technology patents for haptics systems without permission, and Apple said it will appeal.

Apple has been ordered to pay $5.7 billion in damages after a US jury found the company used another firm’s vibration technology without permission, according to BBC Business.

The case stemmed from audio firm Taction Technology’s 2021 claim that Apple infringed two patents covering haptics systems that drive device vibrations for actions such as receiving a message or pressing a button.

Apple denied wrongdoing, saying it had not used Taction’s vibration technology and that it would appeal the verdict.

The technology at issue relates to haptics, which simulate the sense of touch through vibrations, and Apple’s “Taptic Engine” system first debuted with the Apple Watch in 2014.
