Haze crisis adds to heat woes for poultry farmers in Malaysia

Farmers in states including Perak are adding ventilation fans and water misting systems to keep chickens cool as haze hit in August.

A severe haze episode this year has intensified heat-related pressures on livestock farmers in Malaysia and Indonesia, according to reporting from SCMP Economy. Farmers and industry groups say it is hard to disentangle haze smoke from other stressors like heat, water shortages, feed issues, and disease, but the combined strain is taking a toll on animal health, productivity, and finances.

In Selama, Perak, poultry keeper Zaiful Zakaria said he started installing ventilation fans at his open-sided chicken sheds before the haze began affecting Malaysia in August. He later added a water-misting system, aiming to draw out heat and protect the well-being of his mainly ornamental and heritage-breed chickens.

SCMP Economy also notes that the haze crisis is occurring alongside other supply and operating challenges, leaving farmers working to maintain productivity under worsening conditions.
