Pope Leo says AI doom fears should be taken seriously
He made the remarks on a flight back to Rome after a four-day trip to France, directly responding to claims that such concerns are a hoax.
Pope Leo said on Monday that concerns raised by AI experts and specialists about the technology potentially destroying the world are not “fake news” and should be taken seriously, in an apparent rebuke of US President Donald Trump.
In remarks at a press conference during his flight back to Rome after a four-day trip to France, the pontiff said he did not agree that the warnings about AI harms were exaggerated or false.
He also criticised technology CEOs who argued there should be no guardrails on AI.
The comments follow Trump’s statement at the UN General Assembly last week that he believed fears about AI dangers to humanity were a “hoax.”
