South Korea considers airline-style meals for deportees at Incheon airport

Immigration authorities say foreigners awaiting deportation currently receive bread and drinks, and the plan would replace that basic food with meal boxes directly.

A proposal in South Korea to upgrade meals for foreign nationals awaiting deportation at Incheon International Airport has split immigration officials, according to the Korea Times. The Incheon Airport Immigration Office under the Ministry of Justice is considering providing in-flight meal boxes through the airport rather than the current setup.

Foreign nationals ordered to leave the country are transferred to Incheon after local immigration offices confirm an illegal stay and complete procedures, then remain in a designated departure waiting area until their flights depart. At present, those awaiting deportation are provided with bread and drinks supplied by local immigration offices.

The Incheon office says it sees airline-style meals as a practical option, but frontline officers have raised safety concerns and some officials have questioned whether better food is appropriate for people being ordered to leave South Korea for violating the law.

The proposal is still under consideration, with officials weighing the safety issues raised by staff against the office view that meal boxes could replace the basic food currently provided.
