Typhoon Dujuan floods Chiba aquafarm, washing away 100,000 koi

Local authorities said the losses were concentrated at facilities near Lake Imbanuma, with only 200 to 300 carp remaining from a stock of about 100,000 ready for sales.

About a week after Typhoon Dujuan approached Japan, heavy rain in Chiba prefecture near Tokyo breached some levees at a lake, sweeping away around 100,000 ornamental koi carp that were ready for sale.

According to SCMP Economy, flooding associated with the storm inundated rice paddy fields and other farmland, and also hit aquaculture facilities where carp and eels were being cultivated near Lake Imbanuma.

The outlet reported that the aquafarm in Narita was set to begin sales on Sunday, but the farm operator, Kenji Tani, found that nearly all of the fish were lost after he returned home on Tuesday from an overseas trip.

SCMP Economy said only about 200 to 300 of the carp remained, after all but that small number were swept away when the facilities were flooded.
