UK chancellor offers reindustrialisation vision without funding details

The budget is due next month, and the speech gave little indication of where money would come from to fund the plans.

John Healey, the UK chancellor, used his first conference speech to project an upbeat vision for reindustrialising Britain and creating new opportunities for young people, according to the Guardian.

However, the Guardian reports that Healey gave little sense of how the plans would be paid for, with the budget scheduled for about a month away.

The analysis notes that Healey has pledged to stick to fiscal rules in the budget, and that the upcoming budget is widely seen as the point where the prime minister’s reindustrialisation rhetoric could run into fiscal constraints.
