US and China embassies trade accusations over Second Thomas Shoal
The US embassy said Beijing’s actions threatened a collision and stopped a lawful resupply mission to Second Thomas Shoal, a flashpoint in the South China Sea.
Chinese and US embassies in the Philippines traded sharp accusations on Sunday after Washington defended its treaty ally following a Thursday stand-off in the South China Sea. In a written statement, the US embassy in Manila backed the Philippines, saying Beijing’s actions had threatened a collision and prevented what it described as a lawful resupply mission to Second Thomas Shoal, one of the disputes’ flashpoints. The statement urged Beijing to cease escalatory tactics and praised Manila’s professionalism and restraint.
China’s embassy in the Philippines responded quickly, urging Washington to stop fanning the flames and to refrain from actions that it said undermine regional peace and stability, according to the SCMP Economy.
