Vitalik Buterin calls Hegotá potentially Ethereum’s last normal fork
Buterin said Hegotá is planned for 2027 and could mark the last upgrade that stays recognizable to developers from Ethereum’s 2015 era.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said the network’s upcoming Hegotá upgrade could be the last “normal” fork before Ethereum’s development shifts toward newer cryptographic technologies, including recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, optimized consensus, and quantum safe cryptography, according to Cointelegraph.
Buterin described Hegotá, planned for 2027, as a likely final upgrade with features that would still feel familiar to someone who understood Ethereum in 2015, framing the broader effort as an evolution into what he called a “cryptographic world computer.”
Cointelegraph reports that Buterin said Ethereum’s transition would move beyond a model where nodes mainly download and re execute transactions, toward an architecture that combines blockchains with cryptographic verification, privacy, and decentralized offchain components.
He also said the shift could affect how Ethereum applications are built by pushing more computation offchain while using the base layer to verify results, settle transactions, and preserve access to shared onchain state, and his post sparked debate about how much computation and state should remain on Ethereum itself.
