Vitalik Buterin says cryptography could make Ethereum faster without losing decentralization

Buterin argues Ethereum could move verification to cheaper cryptographic proofs, letting specialized participants do more of the work while validators avoid repeating the same computation.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin says advances in cryptography could turn decentralization from a performance cost into a scaling advantage for the network, according to a Sept. 27 essay covered by CryptoSlate.

Buterin frames Ethereum’s long-term destination as a “cryptographic world computer,” where computation and data are distributed across different participants, while compact proofs would let others verify that work was done correctly at low cost.

The approach would differ from the traditional model in which every node downloads transactions and repeats much of the same computation. Buterin suggests Ethereum could push more work across a wider network of specialized participants, potentially allowing decentralization to contribute to performance.

CryptoSlate reports Buterin also pointed to the ability for distributed networks to store more data and run more computation in parallel, including work around the transaction mempool.
