Workers’ comp claims closure rates improve as inventories shrink
A Rising Medical Solutions benchmarking survey found the share of organizations reporting 101% or higher claims closure ratios rose to 36% in 2025 from 30% in 2022.
Higher-performing workers’ compensation claims organizations are distinguishing themselves through operational execution rather than managing simpler claims inventories, according to a Rising Medical Solutions benchmarking study cited by Risk & Insurance.
The study said the percentage of workers’ comp organizations reporting claims closure ratios of 101% or greater increased to 36% in 2025, up from 30% in 2022, while those reporting growing claim inventories fell to 46% from 51% over the same period.
Rising Medical Solutions also found that higher performers were not necessarily handling less complex caseloads, with 56% reporting active indemnity ratios of 41% or greater compared with 42% of lower performers.
The survey of 338 claims leaders and practitioners also reported that 85% of organizations say administrative and compliance workload negatively affects their ability to perform other key claims functions, the report said.
