EU considers delaying methane reporting rules for imported oil and gas
Under the proposed shift, the rules would take effect on January 1, 2027, with penalties for foreign producers that do not comply.
The European Union is considering delaying methane reporting rules for imported oil and gas by as much as a year, Energy industry outlet OilPrice reported. The move comes as tight fuel supplies and rising energy prices increase scrutiny of the EU climate agenda.
According to OilPrice, the rules are currently set to begin on January 1, 2027. Foreign oil and gas producers supplying the EU would be required to monitor and report methane emissions.
OilPrice also said the scheme would include penalties for noncompliance, tying enforcement to methane monitoring and reporting obligations for imported supplies.
