Japan plans Emperor visit and subsidies to revive quake-hit Kyushu tourism
The imperial couple’s scheduled stop in Kumamoto was postponed after poor weather, and local operators want a campaign to reassure visitors the area is safe again.
Travel businesses in southern Japan are looking to a business revival in quake-hit Kyushu, after Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako planned to visit areas hardest hit by a major earthquake this summer, according to SCMP Economy.
The couple had been scheduled to meet communities in Kumamoto prefecture on Tuesday but postponed the trip because of poor weather. On Wednesday, they are set to speak with families currently living in temporary accommodation after losing their homes and businesses.
Local tour operators say visitor numbers in Kyushu, both international and domestic, fell sharply after the disaster. While there are signs domestic tourism is starting to recover, operators are calling for a campaign to reassure tourists that the region is safe to visit again.
