Labour leader Burnham to unveil a publicly owned electricity grid body
The plan aims to speed up UK grid hook-ups and align energy costs with other European nations within 10 years, with funding details to be shared in his first speech.
BBC Business reports that Andy Burnham is expected to announce a new publicly owned company, branded Great British Grid, to invest in Britain’s electricity grid in his first party conference speech as Labour leader on Tuesday in Liverpool.
The outlet says the proposed body would speed up grid hook-ups by driving up competition for connection projects, and it would be positioned as a first step toward greater public control of utilities.
BBC Business adds that Burnham is expected to frame the effort around fixing a UK energy cost crisis that he says has been crippling for businesses.
The report also says he plans to address how the government intends to pay for England’s NHS-style social care system announced over the weekend, and that the full details of the new body have not yet been set out.
