Nifty 50 drops 6.3% in September, worst month in 25 years
The sell-off was tied to higher crude oil prices, elevated bond yields, and persistent overseas selling.
LiveMint Markets reports India’s Nifty 50 fell 6.3% in September, marking its worst September monthly performance in the past 25 years. The index also closed the month lower than in 2001, when it dropped 13.53%.
The decline reflected pressure across most sectors, with pharma the only sector to finish September in gains. Auto, realty, and PSU banking were among the weakest performers during the month.
The weekly picture also deteriorated, with the Nifty posting losses for seven straight weeks through last week, its longest sustained decline since 2020. LiveMint Markets attributed the weakness to a combination of higher crude oil prices, higher bond yields, and persistent selling by overseas investors.
The outlet also noted that the Nifty has recorded seven-week losing streaks only four times in the last 25 years, and that small-cap and mid-cap indices ended a five-series winning run with losses in September.
