Rinehart rare earth holdings fall about $478M in a year
MP Materials and Lynas shares have dropped sharply over the past year, with MP Materials down nearly 32% and Lynas down 18%.
Hancock Prospecting founder Gina Rinehart’s rare earth portfolio has lost an estimated A$680 million, or $478 million, in value over the past year as shares in key holdings declined, according to the Australian Financial Review via Mining.com.
Mining.com reports that MP Materials accounts for roughly two-thirds of the decline, with most of the remainder tied to Lynas Rare Earths. MP Materials shares are down almost 32% over the past year, last trading at $46.64, while Lynas has fallen 18% to A$13.77.
The losses are described as unrealized paper declines rather than losses from asset sales. Mining.com also notes that rare earth investments now account for about 10% of Rinehart’s estimated A$25.1 billion fortune, alongside holdings in lithium and copper.
Mining.com adds that Rinehart’s Hancock stake in MP Materials is valued at about $834 million based on the latest US filings cited by the outlet. It also references that MP shares surged after MP Materials secured a multibillion-dollar Pentagon agreement in 2025, before later retreating.
