Slips and falls drive major injury and claims costs in the US

The CDC says more than 8 million fall injuries are treated in emergency rooms each year, and unintentional falls cost over $195 billion, according to the CDC WISQARS database.

Slips, trips and falls remain a leading cause of injuries and fatalities in the United States, creating large personal and financial losses for individuals and insurers, according to Insurance Journal.

The outlet cites U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data showing more than 8 million fall injuries are reported each year to emergency rooms via the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics, and it says the National Safety Council put the number of those injuries that resulted in death in 2024 at 15,000.

Insurance Journal also points to economic impact figures, saying the CDC WISQARS database indicates the combined economic cost of unintentional falls is in excess of $195 billion.

The article argues that claim management depends on understanding why these incidents occur, helping property owners prevent them proactively, and managing claims properly when slips or falls do happen.
