Chinese simulation claims missile lidar could detect an F-35 at 61.5 km at night

A computer simulation by Chinese researchers suggests a missile-borne lidar system could detect and track an F-35 stealth fighter at up to 61.5 km at night, according to SCMP Economy.

The theoretical model was developed by what SCMP Economy describes as a leading Chinese air force missile supplier and is framed as having implications for the F-35’s ability to survive when operating against China’s stealth fighters.

SCMP Economy also notes skepticism from one analyst, who questioned whether the approach could practically locate a stealth target across a wide sky using a narrow laser beam.

The article adds that in air-to-air combat, the F-35 can carry short-range missiles such as the AIM-9X Sidewinder, which it says has a reported range of about 16 km to 32 km and uses an imaging infrared seeker.
