Exxon and Suncor ask Supreme Court to derail Boulder climate suit
The justices will hear the case on the first day of the court’s new nine-month term, after nearly 60 other state and local governments filed similar climate-related lawsuits seeking billions.
Facing potential climate-change liability, ExxonMobil and Suncor Energy have again asked the US Supreme Court to block a lawsuit filed by Boulder, Colorado officials, a dispute that could shape the fate of dozens of climate-related cases against fossil fuel companies, Insurance Journal reports.
The Boulder case centers on an effort to hold the companies liable for alleged contributions to climate change and for allegedly misleading the public about risks tied to fossil fuels.
The Supreme Court argument is scheduled for next Monday, on the first day of the court’s new nine-month term. Exxon and Suncor said nearly 60 state and local governments have brought similar suits seeking billions of dollars, and a ruling favoring the companies could lead to many of those cases being dismissed.
Insurance Journal also notes the Trump administration has backed Exxon and Suncor, arguing that federal law precludes Boulder’s claims. The case reflects a broader pattern of energy-sector companies turning to the courts to limit climate-related liability or federal environmental regulation.
