Gold Fields pauses Windfall development after Quebec permit expires
Gold Fields said the bulk-exploration permit expired at the end of August, and the Windfall mine is still awaiting separate Quebec environmental approval.
Gold Fields has paused underground development at its Windfall project in Quebec after an exploration-work permit expired, according to Mining.com.
The outlet said the bulk-exploration work permit lapsed at the end of August, leaving the company’s proposed $1.9 billion gold mine dependent on separate provincial environmental approval.
Gold Fields expects Windfall, about 415 km northwest of Quebec City, to produce 300,000 oz. per year from 2029, but cannot move into full construction until Quebec authorizes the project, Mining.com reported.
The pause adds to broader uncertainties the company cited around its Windfall and Tarkwa assets, with Fraser noting that shares fell 1% to $36.10.
