Indonesia moves to make public education free nationwide
The government also aims to eliminate state university fees, including standard semester tuition and initial admission charges.
Indonesia is pursuing plans to make public education free at all levels, from kindergarten through senior high and vocational school, according to statements relayed by cabinet secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, as reported by SCMP Economy.
The plan targets Indonesia’s roughly 164,000 public schools covering those levels, and follows President Prabowo Subianto summoning ministers to discuss how to accelerate implementation, the outlet said.
The government also plans to finalize measures to remove fees at state universities, including standard semester tuition and initial admission fees, within the next two to four weeks, Wijaya said.
Analysts cited by SCMP Economy said mounting pressure on the state budget could hinder the government from carrying out the overhaul at the scale described.
