MI5 warns China-backed research includes AI funding for espionage

MI5 said it identified more than 100 UK academics involved in CGTRI-funded projects tied to China’s Ministry of State Security.

Britain’s MI5 issued an “Espionage Alert” saying a Chinese organization was funding academic research in the UK on behalf of Beijing’s state security service, according to reporting by SCMP Economy.

MI5 said its investigation found more than 100 UK-based academics contributed to projects funded by the China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI), which it described as having very strong ties to the Chinese Ministry of State Security.

The alert said CGTRI’s primary purpose is to fund research that directly improves the MSS’s technical capability for espionage, and named topics including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, covert communications systems, and steganography.

MI5 said the activity supports MSS espionage and poses a threat to UK national security, citing the value of those technical areas to intelligence work.
