Nearly 150 Hong Kong firms cut packaging waste in 2025 charter

The Environmental Protection Department assessed participants on packaging recyclability and efforts to use less packaging material.

Nearly 150 companies in Hong Kong reduced packaging material over the past year, with the total amount described as equivalent to the weight of about 900 double-decker buses. The reductions followed participation in a waste reduction government charter launched in 2025, with an award ceremony held on Wednesday.

The SCMP reports that 75 firms were recognized after the Environmental Protection Department assessed efforts across five criteria, including packaging recyclability and promoting the use of fewer packaging materials. The outlet also cited examples of A-1 Bakery, Watsons Water, and SF Express Hong Kong among those recognized.

At the ceremony, Diane Wong Shuk-han, the Undersecretary for Environment and Ecology, said Hong Kong has aimed to cut packaging waste using pragmatic and feasible principles. She also noted that mandatory national standards began in mainland China in July to restrict excessive packaging in delivery parcels.

Wong added that environmental protection and economic development are not mutually exclusive, saying they complement each other.
