Netherlands to introduce capital gains tax that could cover Bitcoin

The Dutch cabinet said the policy would tax gains when realized, and it did not specify whether digital assets would be taxed in 2028 or two years later.

Bitcoin Magazine reports that the Dutch government plans to introduce a capital gains levy starting in 2028, with Bitcoin possibly included among the major assets covered.

The planned approach, according to a cabinet letter to the House of Representatives cited by Bitcoin Magazine, would collect tax on investment gains when they are realized, rather than taxing assumed returns or unrealized increases in value.

Bitcoin Magazine adds that the government indicated most financial instruments would be taxed from 2028, while remaining assets would transition two years later, but the letter was unclear on whether digital assets would be taxed in 2028 or from 2030.
