POET supplies 100% ethanol for US marine bunkering trial with Maersk
The Houston trial marked the first US-based bunkering operation using 100% ethanol and built on Maersk’s earlier testing in its dual-fuel fleet.
POET, one of the world’s largest ethanol producers, supplied plant-based ethanol for the first 100% ethanol bunkering operation in the United States, marking a milestone for renewable fuel use in maritime shipping, according to World Grain.
The successful trial was carried out in Houston, Texas, with AP Moller-Maersk, and the operation was described as the first US-based bunkering of a vessel using 100% ethanol.
World Grain reports the effort also builds on Maersk’s prior testing of ethanol in its dual-fuel fleet, with POET saying the marine sector could use bioethanol as a low-carbon-intensity fuel option while relying on existing fuel and supply infrastructure.
