Retail options traders grew participation after CAS launch
NSE data show the number of equity options accounts in August fell to 3.3 million from 3.44 million in July, even as retail-only segments increased.
India’s capital markets regulator has introduced measures to curb retail losses in equity options trading, but participation rose for small investors after the closing auction session (CAS) began on 3 August, according to analysis of NSE data published by LiveMint.
LiveMint reports that the number of individuals trading up to ₹10,000 each in equity options increased to 440,000 in August from 420,000 in July, while participation for those trading ₹10,000 to ₹100,000 rose to 820,000 from 800,000.
The outlet also said other investor categories reduced participation during the same period, including participants trading over ₹10 crore each, whose count fell to 7,000 in August from 10,000 in the prior month.
As a result, LiveMint reports the total number of investors trading equity options declined to 3.3 million in August from 3.44 million in July, even with retail up to ₹1 lakh seeing the only increase after CAS introduction.
