Leonardo DiCaprio backs critics of Belo Sun’s planned Brazil gold mine
DiCaprio’s comments add international attention as Brazilian prosecutors and FUNAI seek to undo a court ruling that favored Belo Sun on permitting.
Mining.com reports Leonardo DiCaprio has publicly supported opponents of Belo Sun Mining’s proposed Volta Grande gold project in Brazil’s Pará state, adding a high-profile voice to a permitting dispute.
The planned project would be a $300 million open-pit gold mine, which Belo Sun positions as the country’s largest open-pit gold development, according to Mining.com.
Mining.com adds that Brazilian prosecutors and the National Indian Foundation, FUNAI, are trying to overturn a court ruling that was favorable to Belo Sun, in a dispute that highlights the permitting challenges for mining projects in environmentally and socially sensitive areas near Indigenous communities.
Mining.com also notes that securing permits for mining projects in Brazil can take five to 10 years, and that opposition has intensified amid greater scrutiny of the industry.
