Taiwan seeks funding to quadruple ammunition stocks to 120 days
The six-year plan would cost NT$27.59 billion in total, with NT$7.3 billion requested for this year and NT$7.3 billion proposed for 2027.
Taiwan’s military plans to spend more than NT$27 billion, about US$850 million, to quadruple critical ammunition stocks to a 120-day supply to sustain combat operations during a wartime blockade, according to SCMP Economy. The programme would run from this year through 2031 and aims to strengthen Taipei’s ability to keep fighting if a cross-strait conflict disrupts external supply lines.
The spending proposal, revealed September 26, still requires legislative approval. SCMP Economy reported the programme is expected to cost NT$27.59 billion overall, including NT$7.3 billion allocated for this year through a supplementary budget and another NT$7.3 billion proposed for 2027 to accelerate procurement of various types of critical ammunition.
Taiwan’s defense ministry said its goal is to gradually increase combat-ready ammunition from the current 30 days to 120 days, with Lieutenant General Huang Wen-chi, the strategic planning director, describing the shift as part of efforts to improve readiness ahead of potential blockade scenarios.
The proposal follows related defense activities, including Taiwan’s conclusion of annual war games that included preparation for a potential PLA sea blockade, as SCMP Economy noted.
