U.S. electricity use for EVs rises more slowly in 2026
The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimated light-duty EVs consumed 8% more electricity in the first six months of 2026 than in the second half of 2025.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates that light-duty electric vehicles in the United States consumed 8% more electricity during the first six months of 2026 than in the last half of 2025.
In its Monthly Energy Review, the agency said this compares with faster year-to-year electricity growth seen in earlier periods, when six-month consumption increases ranged from 13% to 24% in recent years.
The EIA attributed the slower pace to a decline in EV sales after federal tax credits expired in September.
