UK court orders ex-NCA officer to repay $2.4 million for bitcoin theft
The order covers 50 BTC taken from a seized wallet in a Silk Road 2.0 investigation, with authorities citing Bitcoin’s rise since 2017 for the large value gap.
A UK court has ordered a former National Crime Agency officer to repay more than $2.4 million after he stole bitcoin taken from a wallet seized during a dark web investigation, according to Decrypt.
The Crown Prosecution Service secured a confiscation order against Paul Chowles, 44, requiring repayment of £1,810,678.93. Prosecutors said he took 50 BTC that were worth about £60,000, or roughly $77,000, when he moved them nine years ago.
The court order reflects that only 30 of the 50 BTC were recovered, and the remaining difference is attributed to Bitcoin’s appreciation since 2017, the outlet reported.
Decrypt also said Chowles was part of the NCA team investigating Silk Road 2.0, and that he moved the coins out of a confiscated wallet and tried to obscure where they went.
