UK-France “one in, one out” migrant deal is scrapped

Britain said the pilot is no longer processing new cases, after about 1,500 people were returned to France under the 3-year plan.

The UK government has scrapped a pilot program with France aimed at reducing the number of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats, Britain’s Home Office said, according to SCMP Economy citing a government statement.

The Home Office said the so-called “one in, one out” arrangement is no longer processing new cases.

Under the plan, people who arrived in the UK after crossing the Channel could be detained and returned to France in exchange for an equivalent number of asylum seekers who applied through a safe and legal route.

SCMP Economy reported that under the deal some 1,500 individuals were returned to France, while a slightly fewer number were transferred to the UK, and that the pilot was intended to run for three years with an option to end earlier.
