Anthropic suspends some Hong Kong Claude accounts tied to VPN use
Users in Hong Kong said Anthropic cited “suspicious signals” and revoked access under its usage policies, including after months of using services through NordVPN.
US artificial intelligence company Anthropic has stepped up enforcement of geographical restrictions on its Claude models in Hong Kong, according to complaints from local users about sudden account suspensions.
As reported by SCMP Economy, users said they had operated accounts for months by accessing the service through virtual private networks, but found their accounts disabled after enforcement ramped up. A wave of complaints surfaced on X and Reddit on Thursday.
One Hong Kong-based user on Reddit said Anthropic emailed them that the safeguards team flagged “suspicious signals” tied to the account and that access would be revoked for usage policy violations, adding they had used the service with NordVPN from Hong Kong for six months.
The same user said they were trying to retrieve their conversation history and data after the suspension.
