Bayer trial resumes over allegations of inadequate Roundup testing
The Missouri case involves plaintiffs not participating in a proposed $7.25 billion class action settlement as Bayer faces about 65,000 Roundup claims in US courts.
Insurance Journal reports that attorneys for three cancer patients told a Missouri jury on Sept. 29 that Bayer’s Monsanto unit failed to adequately test its Roundup weedkiller before selling it.
The trial is expected to help determine the viability of some Roundup lawsuits after a US Supreme Court ruling in Bayer’s favor earlier this year, according to the outlet.
Bayer faces approximately 65,000 claims in US state and federal courts from plaintiffs who say they developed cancer after using Roundup at home or at work, the report says.
The company is seeking to resolve nearly all existing and future claims through a $7.25 billion class action settlement under review by a Missouri state court judge in St. Louis, while Tuesday’s case involves three women not participating in that settlement.
