DOE seeks to regain control of critical-minerals supply chains
The department is investing across mining, processing, technology and workforce development to rebuild domestic capabilities that shifted overseas over the past three decades.
The U.S. Department of Energy is pursuing a plan to regain control of critical-minerals supply chains, framing the effort as necessary for energy, economic and national security, according to Mining.com.
Audrey Robertson, the DOE assistant secretary of energy for critical minerals and energy innovation, said the department is investing across mining, processing, technology and workforce development to rebuild domestic capabilities that moved overseas during the past three decades.
The DOE strategy is not limited to developing new mines, Robertson said, with an emphasis on accelerating existing projects and improving processing technology.
She added that the department also wants to create conditions for U.S. heavy industry to compete profitably at home, including bringing companies that have outsourced operations back to the United States.
