Electrum updates Lightning backup recovery for some Bitcoin users

Electrum says version 4.8.2 is the latest release listed on its site as of Oct. 1, and affected backups may lack payment-key data needed to sweep coins after an anchor channel remote close.

Electrum’s latest security update fixes a Lightning backup defect, but some Bitcoin wallet users still need to replace previously saved backups to ensure recovery from certain Lightning channel exports, according to CryptoSlate.

The update targets older backups from wallets with non-deterministic Lightning keys, where backup data may not contain the payment-key information needed to reclaim funds from an anchor channel after a remote close, CryptoSlate reports.

CryptoSlate notes that non-deterministic Lightning keys cannot be recreated from a wallet’s seed, and Electrum’s release notes say two conditions must coincide: the wallet uses non-deterministic Lightning keys, and the backup involves an anchor channel.

Electrum’s release notes also indicate the warning applies to individual channel exports and exported full-wallet backups tied to Lightning recovery, and CryptoSlate reports that version 4.8.2 is dated Sept. 11 and was the latest release listed on Electrum’s official website as of Oct. 1.
