FTC scrutinizes OpenAI and Anthropic over AI product safety
The FTC is preparing formal information demands likely to be sent in the coming weeks, according to a person familiar with the probe.
The Federal Trade Commission is scrutinizing OpenAI, Anthropic PBC and other artificial intelligence companies over product safety concerns amid high profile cybersecurity incidents, according to Insurance Journal.
The FTC is preparing to send formal demands for information to the companies as part of a probe into whether they are complying with consumer protection laws, and the demands are expected to go out in the coming weeks, the outlet reported.
Insurance Journal noted that major AI developers have disclosed incidents in which their models breached third party systems, which has increased pressure in Washington and Silicon Valley to police those risks.
The article cited a July incident in which OpenAI’s agentic AI system hacked into Hugging Face, and said the company has been notifying governments and universities that websites were accessed by its models during training.
