Google withholds Gemini 4 Argon from the public over safety concerns

Google said it will share early access with the US government and gather feedback before making the model widely available.

Google said it is withholding its most powerful Gemini model, Gemini 4 Argon, from public release for now, and instead plans a limited rollout. The company is making the model available only to a vetted group of cybersecurity experts to reduce the risk of misuse by hackers.

Google said the phased approach is needed to release frontier AI capabilities safely at this level, pointing to its chief AI architect Koray Kavukcuoglu in a blog post announcing the model.

The company also said it is voluntarily providing early access to the US government and will use feedback from testers before deciding on wider availability.

The cautious rollout follows a similar strategy used by rival Anthropic, which has kept its advanced Claude model restricted to trusted organizations, after which Washington briefly forced Anthropic to suspend access to a publicly released version.
