UK seeks EU coordination to tap emergency diesel reserves amid US threat
UK officials say roughly a third of the country’s diesel imports last year came from the United States.
Britain is in talks with European allies about releasing emergency diesel stockpiles after Donald Trump threatened to cut off US fuel supplies, according to the Guardian Business.
Ministers held calls with counterparts from the European Commission, Germany, France, Italy and Ireland to discuss whether to draw down EU reserves, after the US told Germany and France to release their stockpiles to help ease soaring global energy prices or face a potential US export ban.
The warning represents what the outlet describes as an escalation of pressure on Europe as Trump considers a wider ban tied to efforts to lower domestic fuel prices ahead of the US midterm elections in November.
The UK faces a domestic supply constraint, the Guardian Business notes, saying it does not refine enough diesel to meet demand and that about a third of UK diesel imports last year came from the US.
